Scott's Resume Header Instructions:

  1. It's pretty easy creating the top header found on Scott's new resume.  From Microsoft Word, simply click on the table icon that's normally displayed in the upper tool bar.  Right away on your screen, you'll notice a large box containing numerous smaller boxes inside of it.  Use your cursor to shade the first row along with two columns.  Once you've done this, let go and immediately on your screen you'll observe a rectangle containing two boxes like the one just below.

  1. If you'll refer to the example of Scott's new resume just below, you notice that the top header doesn't have two equal-sized containers for the name information and address information.  Instead, the box that I chose to type Scott's name in is much smaller than the right-side box.

  1. To duplicate what I did, you'll need to grab hold of the center table line and drag it to the left until you have a box on the left-hand side of your screen that looks to be about the same size as the name container box used in Scott's resume or until the box comfortably fits with the measurements of your own name text information.   Next, type your name in the first box.  So far, it should look like the example just below.

  1. Make sure that the information in the first box is typed using a larger font and if you haven't noticed already the name text was typed originally using the computer's default font color of black.  You'll need to highlight the name and select a font color of white.  After you've done this, select Format from the main menu bar.  Next, click on Borders and Shading.  Next, click on the tab Shading.  Make sure you've shaded or selected the first box only or you'll end up altering both boxes.  Next, choose the color black and click OK.   Your header should now look like the illustration just below.

  1. Now, you're almost there, the last step in duplicating the header above is to turn off the table borders.  By default in Microsoft Word your table borders are always on.  Subsequently, you'll need to turn them off.  Once you've done this, the top of your resume should look like Scott's new resume header.  Now, to turn off your table's borders, simply open the Format panel again, click on Borders and Shading, and this time click on the Borders tab.  Make sure that you have the entire table selected this time around.  If you don't do this, you could end up with your borders removed only in one column.  Finally, click on the box with the word "None" right beside it or choose the box that doesn't have any borders surrounding it and then click OK.  Now, your header should look exactly like the one below.
